The bags that hold their value

6 minutes·

Which luxury bags resell for more than they cost, which lose half their value in a year, and how to buy, use and store a bag so that it stays an asset.

In short

  • Hermès Birkin and Kelly, Chanel Classic Flap and Louis Vuitton monogram classics resell at or above retail. Most other bags lose 30 to 60 percent.
  • Condition is everything: corners, handles and hardware decide the resale grade.
  • Buy the classic size in a classic colour and leather. Seasonal colours are for pleasure, not for value.

The three that behave like assets

The Hermès Birkin and Kelly, in Togo, Epsom or Clemence leather and standard sizes, have appreciated for two decades and trade above retail on the secondary market, largely because Hermès controls supply. The Chanel Classic Flap in medium caviar leather with gold hardware has roughly doubled in retail price since 2019 and resells close to retail. Louis Vuitton’s monogram canvas classics (Speedy, Neverfull, Keepall) hold value because they are practically indestructible and always in demand.

The ones that hold their shape, not their value

Bottega Veneta, Loewe, Celine, Dior and Gucci make beautiful bags that lose 30 to 60 percent of their price at first resale. That is fine: they are bought to be used. The Loewe Puzzle, the Celine Triomphe and the Bottega Cassette are excellent bags and, on the pre-owned market, excellent value.

What decides the resale grade

Corners (rubbed or intact), handles (darkened by hands or clean), hardware (scratched or bright), interior (stains, pen marks) and smell. A bag graded excellent with box, dust bag and receipt sells for 20 to 40 percent more than the same bag graded good. Hermès bags are additionally judged on the date stamp and whether the leather is a sought-after type.

How to buy

From the house, where possible, for warranty and provenance. Hermès quota bags (Birkin, Kelly) are offered to established clients; the secondary market is the practical way for most buyers, through dealers who authenticate and guarantee. Chanel and Vuitton are available at retail. Pre-owned platforms with in-house authentication are safe if you check the return policy; private sales are where the superfakes live.

How to use and store

Alternate bags rather than using one daily. Keep the dust bag, box and receipt. Store upright, stuffed with acid-free tissue, away from sunlight and heat. Never hang a bag by its handles for long periods. Have leather conditioned by a specialist once a year, and have corners and edges repaired early, ideally by the house’s own spa service.

Buying for pleasure

None of this should stop you buying the bag you love in the colour you love. It just helps to know which bags are savings and which are spending. Knowing the difference is the difference between a collection and a closet.

Questions people ask

Which handbag has the best resale value?

The Hermès Birkin and Kelly in standard leathers and sizes, followed by the Chanel Classic Flap. Both typically resell at or above their retail price.

Is a luxury bag a good investment?

A very small number of models are. Most luxury bags lose a third to half their value at resale, which is normal for a beautiful object that is used.

How do I avoid fake luxury bags?

Buy from the house, from an authorised retailer or from a resale platform with in-house authentication and a return guarantee. Superfakes now fool casual inspection.
