Lisbon and Cascais
Lisbon’s hills, light and tiles have drawn the world since 2015: Chiado and Príncipe Real for apartments, Lapa for palaces, Cascais and Estoril on the coast for villas and the golf. The Four Seasons Ritz and the Bairro Alto Hotel are the addresses; Belcanto and its siblings the restaurants. Prices have tripled and remain half of Paris.
Comporta
An hour south of Lisbon, across the Tagus, Comporta is rice fields, pine forests, empty beaches and the most discreet luxury in Europe: Christian Louboutin and Philippe Starck have houses here, Sublime Comporta is the hotel, and planning rules keep it low and quiet. Land is the scarce asset and prices for the few villas with permits have risen fast.
The Algarve
The Golden Triangle between Quinta do Lago, Vale do Lobo and Vilamoura is the established luxury market: golf courses, gated villas, a mild winter, the Conrad and Vila Vita Parc. The west coast around Lagos and Sagres is wilder, with cliffs, surf and a growing number of design-led villas.
Porto and the Douro
Porto is the country’s second city and its most atmospheric, with the Yeatman above the port lodges. The Douro valley, the oldest demarcated wine region in the world, now has Six Senses and a string of quintas turned into hotels. A week here is wine, river and silence.
